The gradient fill you apply will fade the photo from fully opaque to fully transparent. Any shade of grey in between will partially show/hide the image. Black areas will hide your image (hiding what is on the layer) and white areas fully show the image. Fill your image with a gradient fill from white to black. Make sure this icon is active (has a red border around it and if it doesn't, click on it to activate it). A small white rectangle appears to the right of the layer thumbnail indicating you have a clip mask which shows all of your layer.
